Ericsson Starts Plan for 4G Technology
Ericsson (ERICY) said Monday it had begun preparations for a fourth-generation wireless technology that will lead to a significant increase in Internet access speeds and picture quality. Ericsson research chief Hakan Eriksson said 4G technology could increase connection speeds by over 50 times what is offered by third-generation networks, which will first be introduced next year.
GEO Lands Lucent Video Services Deal
GEO Interactive (GIM-L), a manufacturer of software for audio and video streaming via wireless and Internet networks, announced that is has formed an agreement with Lucent Technologies (LU) to offer advanced video services that employ GEO's Emblaze software. The agreement calls for Lucent Digital Video to market Emblaze products, which are manufactured by GEO's Orca Interactive unit.The software will allow Lucent's carrier customers to supply real-time broadband broadcasting over different types of networks. Investor response to the news was positive, with GEO shares climbing 6.1%. Reuters (10/02/00)
Nistevo Trumpets Results of Study on Collaborative Logistics
Software seller Nistevo has praised the results of a report from Omni Consulting Group. The report showed that Nistevo's software could increase the efficiency of the logistics process by a maximum of 12.3% with technical and operational growth. The report looked at the logistics software packages based on a study of a packaged goods company, applying economic theory and game theory. Frank Bernhard, managing principal of the supply chain at Omni, stated that if network members share more timely and better quality information, economic gains will result. A new Internet-based cargo insurance service created by Global Sources (GSOL) and dollarDEX has started in Asia. The joint venture hopes to improve trade transactions between vendors and seekers of cargo insurance.The user will request insurance quotes from vendors, who must respond in one day. The service can be found at www.insurancesources.com, with initial vendors in Singapore and Hong Kong.
