Trucking Safety Veteran William K. Barton Dies at 77

William K. Barton, a 50-year trucking veteran, died at age 77 after a long battle with cancer. He passed away Dec. 25 in Carrollton, Texas.

With a career that would focus on safety, Mr. Barton got his start in the industry in April 1941 with Healzer Cartage in Kansas City, Mo. He began as a billing clerk and worked his way up to various positions before becoming safety director. His 15 years with Healzer would be interrupted twice, once serving in the Army Air Force during World War II and then being recalled for active duty during the Korean conflict.

After leaving Healzer in 1956, Mr. Barton spent eight years with Steere Tank Lines as its safety director.

Mr. Barton worked with several insurance companies between 1965 to 1990, including Transport Indemnity of Los Angeles, Carriers Insurance of Des Moines, Iowa, and Transport Insurance of Dallas.
