CEOs Call State-by-State Process a ‘Nightmare’

he Transportation Security Administration’s requirement that states administer separate programs to check the backgrounds of 3.5 million truck drivers licensed to carry hazardous materials will create a “nightmare,” six trucking industry executives said last week.

“Our companies move commerce nationwide and our drivers are everywhere. Simply put, allowing each state to implement its own processes would be a nightmare. There would be significant delays and driver downtime if states are allowed to implement their own processes,” the industry leaders said.

TSA replied that it imposed the requirement after consulting with state governments.



The chief executive officers of six major trucking fleets signed a letter to TSA to protest several sets of requirements that the agency first set earlier this year and then changed on Nov. 7.
