Class 8 truck orders surged 70% year-over-year to 29,900, the highest July on record, as trucking companies continued to shore up their fleets, ACT Research reported.

ACT Vice President Steve Tam said the month’s preliminary net orders total was the highest in the firm’s data, which dates to 1982, narrowly eclipsing the July 1998 total of 29,697.

July generally is the weakest month for truck orders, Tam told Transport Topics. “July is usually when everybody goes fishing, not ordering trucks,” he said Aug. 5.

The total was the highest since January’s 34,558 figure. ACT also revised June’s total slightly higher, to 26,729 from an originally reported 26,600.

Year-to-date orders, at 198,828, are up 33% over last year.
