The atmosphere among Class 8 truck producers remains cautious, but no further major production cutbacks are planned aside from the two already announced.
While Volvo Trucks North America and Navistar International have layoffs scheduled at plants, four other competitors — Mack Trucks Inc., Freightliner Corp., Western Star Trucks and Paccar Inc. — do not plan such drastic action.
Paul Vikner, executive vice president at Mack, said his company has no plans to reduce production of Class 8 trucks. But he did say that the manufacturer in Allentown, Pa., was “watching the markets closely,” especially that for used trucks.
“There are no doubt a lot of used trucks out there, especially of the fleet spec type,” he said.
