Transportation Stocks Take Hit in Market Tumble

Transportation stocks, including airlines, trucking companies and railroads, were among the hardest hit in Tuesday’s stock market tumble, the Associated Press reported.The Dow Jones Transportation Average fell 3.4%, with all 20 components declining, AP said. Railroad operator CSX Corp. lost 5.2%.Transport stocks are frequently considered vulnerable to economic downturns, and are among the quickest to fall when trouble arises. The transport index was down in early Tuesday trading, CNN reported.The Amex Airline Index fell 3.9% Tuesday, with all 11 carriers registering losses, AP reported.The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 416 points or 3.3% Tuesday in the biggest tumble in five years, news reports said. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 3.5%. The Nasdaq average fell 3.9%.All 30 components of the Dow were in the red, led by a 4.3% drop in General Motors.
