Third-Party Logistics Spending Up 16%

Spending on third-party logistics grew 16.5% to an estimated $46 billion in 1999, according to Armstrong & Associates, a research firm in Stoughton, Wis.

Domestic transportation management and dedicated contract carriage increased 18% and warehouse-based logistics services grew 16%, the company estimated.

Non-asset-based international transportation management was up 11%, reflecting an easing of Asian economic difficulties, researcher Richard Armstrong said.

Armstrong said he expects overall growth in the 15% to 20% range for three or four more years, with more companies outsourcing transportation and inventory functions.
