Freightliner Offers In-Dash Scales for Trucks With Air Suspensions

Freightliner Trucks said that for the first time it was offering customers an option of ordering an in-dash scale system for all truck models with air suspensions.

Freightliner, which is the largest U.S. supplier of heavy-duty trucks, said it was offering the Air-Weigh company’s on-board truck and trailer scale system as a factory option on medium- and heavy-duty models.

Peter Powell, vice president of marketing at Air-Weigh, told Transport Topics Aug. 16 the agreement marked the first time an on-board scale from any company had made the leap from an aftermarket product to a factory option at a truck maker.

He said that “we are very, very pleased Freightliner stepped up and said, ‘This makes good sense.’ Weight is an important piece of data to make available to the driver.”

Powell said “several other truck manufacturers are also rushing to get this [factory] option out,” but did not identify them.

Freightliner Trucks’ senior vice president of sales and marketing, Mark Lampert, said the new option “takes the guesswork out of loading, which helps our customers maximize their time on the road while minimizing fines and fees.”
