SmartDrive is deploying its video-based safety program across Swift Transportation’s entire fleet, the company announced June 16.

Swift Transportation’s aim is to improve its safety results. The truckload carrier joins hundreds of other fleets using the program, including its sister company, Knight Transportation.

“SmartDrive allows our drivers and fleets to clearly see and measure safety performance, which allows the company to foster meaningful ownership of safety performance,” Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc. CEO Dave Jackson said in a statement. “SmartDrive excels in aligning drivers, operations and management around insightful and actionable metrics, allowing us to reinforce our safety culture of accountability throughout our entire organization.”

SmartDrive will be deployed across Swift’s fleet of vehicles in the United States and Mexico. Swift Transportation felt the program will allow drivers to take personal performance and improvement into their own hands through safety score metrics and its dashboard.

“Knight Transportation has experienced meaningful reductions in collision rates since installing SmartDrive in its fleet,” said Brett Sant, senior vice president, safety and risk management at Knight-Swift Transportation. “That experience was instructive in the decision, ultimately, to roll out the SmartDrive program within our Swift fleets.”

Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings is the result of the two subsidiary companies merging in September 2017. The company now has a combined fleet of roughly 19,300 tractors and 68,000 trailers. It ranks No. 7 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America. — Transport Topics
