ruckload carrier Swift Transportation Co. reported late Wednesday it earned $37.5 million or 50 cents a share in the first quarter, up from $19.4 million or 26 cents a year earlier.

Revenue rose 2.7% to $763 million, Swift said in a statement.

The first-quarter revenue included $99.1 million in fuel surcharges, compared with $66.4 million a year earlier.

Excluding the fuel surcharges, operating revenue dropped 1.8% or $12.3 million, primarily due to a reduction in average linehaul tractors, the company said.

Swift is ranked No. 10 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
