ASHINGTON — Trucking fleet safety managers said their company executives regard speeding and aggressive driving as the worst safety-management problem, according to a report by the Transportation Research Board.

A survey of 139 trucking firms’ safety managers said 55% of the managers showed those behaviors leading a “Top 20” list of safety problems, TRB said during the board’s recent annual meeting here.

TRB defined those unsafe driving practices as speeding, excessive speed on curves in bad weather, following too closely, crowding other vehicles during lane changes, failure to yield at intersections and “general disobedience of rules of the road.”

TRB said the managers’ second- worst driver-related safety problem came from drivers who combined a number of “high-risk” factors, such as bad driving habits, an unhealthy lifestyle, poor morale and the use of alcohol or illicit drugs.
