Study Cites Alternative Fuels’ Role in Emissions Reduction

The University of Minnesota’s Center for Transportation Studies found the state’s greenhouse gas emissions reductions goal of 30% by 2025 to be feasible and said that alternative fuels, vehicle fuel efficiency and reducing vehicle miles traveled were central to reaching the goal, the Associated Press reported.

The group can meet its objectives, according to Julian Marshall, co-author of the report and an assistant professor of environmental engineering at the school, AP said.

The report proposed idling-reduction techniques, better tire design, proper tire inflation and reduced speed limits to improve fuel efficiency in heavy-duty vehicles, AP reported.

It also said the use of cellulosic biofuels, made from crops not used for foods, was imperative, AP said.
