Stability System Mandate Sent to White House

A proposal to require electronic stability control systems in heavy vehicles has been sent to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review.

OMB said it received the proposal from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Dec. 13.

The standard would require systems that reduce both rollover and loss-of-control crashes, which account for about 304 deaths and 2,738 each year, the Department of Transportation, said. The systems would prevent 37% to 56% of single-vehicle tractor-trailer rollovers, NHTSA estimated.

NHTSA expects the proposal to be published for public comment in February.
