The recent confirmation hearing for Surface Transportation Board nominee Wayne Burkes served as a preview of the upcoming debate on reauthorization of the three-year-old regulatory body.

While the Senate Commerce Committee approved the nominations of both Burkes and William Clyburn to the board on Feb. 11, Burkes’ hearing two days before illus-trated the split between Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) and a group of lawmakers led by Surface Trans-portation Subcommittee Chairman Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas).
