Like thousands of his fellow long-haul drivers, Richard McGrew gets to enjoy the panorama of America from his high vantage point behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer. And like many of his compatriots, McGrew enjoys photographing the magnificent scenery through which he travels.

Over the years, he has artfully captured the landscape in 6,000 photographs that fill 20 albums. And now he is sharing the best of his collection with the public in a “coffee table” book that he essentially published himself — with the help of friends and supporters — in November 1999.

“The America You May Never See,” which reproduces 43 of McGrew’s finest shots from his big rig and sells through several travel centers and over the Internet, has drawn not only critical praise but also the attention of a national network television show, which is expected to air a segment on McGrew’s photo book.

Bill Geist, travel correspondent for “CBS News Sunday Morning,” and a camera crew recently retraced with McGrew one of the book’s scenic routes through Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.
