olice in Columbus, Ohio, have linked only two of 11 recent shootings along a five-mile stretch of a southern section of Interstate 270, news services reported.

At a news conference, Chief Deputy Steve Martin of the Franklin County sheriff's office said one or more people are deliberately targeting drivers.

The shootings have all taken place at different times of day, killing one person and piercing trucks, cars, vans and pickups, shattering windows and flattening tires. I-270 circles the city and connects with I-70, a major east-west route.

Police confirmed Friday a Nov. 25 shooting that killed a 62-year-old woman was not accidental and is linked to at least one other case, the Associated Press reported.

The sheriff's department said the shootings were probably committed by people who were familiar with the area, which is surrounded by woods and popular with hunters, Reuters reported.

Extra patrols have been assigned to the section of the highway, AP said.

A string of highway violence began in May, but most of the shootings have taken place in the last seven weeks, AP said.
