The top trucking policymaker in the Senate, John Thune (R-S.D.), announced his pick to lead the panel as staff director in 2016.

Nick Rossi, deputy staff director at the Senate Commerce Committee, will succeed David Schwietert, as staff director for Republicans.

“Having served three years as deputy staff director, Nick is already in the thick of the committee’s many policy and oversight initiatives on behalf of the American people,” said Thune, chairman of the committee. “His leadership and experience will be invaluable in advancing the committee’s many priorities in the new year.”

Prior to joining the Commerce panel, Rossi was minority staff director for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Before that, the Ohio native spent a decade at the FBI. The Commerce Committee has jurisdiction over trucking policy.

Schwietert is leaving his post after working more than 10 years for Thune.

“Throughout his time on the Commerce Committee, he’s never forgotten about the needs of South Dakota families, farmers, and businesses,” Thune said Dec. 17.
