WASHINGTON — Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), author of the rules Congress set for opening the U.S. border to Mexican trucks, told Transportation Secretary Mary Peters she suspected the agency may be stacking the deck in its recently announced pilot program.Murray, chairwoman of the key Senate Appropriations Committee transportation subcommittee, was joined by some Republicans in cri-ticizing the Department of Transportation’s border plan.“I am very concerned that DOT may be deliberately allowing only the top Mexican truck companies to participate in the pilot project, simply to skew the results so the outcome looks better,” Murray told Peters during a March 8 hearing by the subcommittee. For the full story, see the March 12 print edition of Transport Topics.
