CBP Begins FAST Enforcement

Customs and Border Protection last Thursday began phased enforcement of its Free and Secure Trade card requirement, under which Canadian and Mexican carriers hauling hazardous materials into the United States are required to possess a FAST card.

Under the first phase of enforcement, drivers who do not have a FAST card will be given notice that they have until November 12 to comply with the rule.



Beginning November 13, Canadian and Mexican hazmat drivers without a card will not be permitted to transport hazardous materials across U.S. borders. Transport Topics


Truck Height Violations Continue at Va. Tunnel

Trucks too tall to drive through the westbound section of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel in Hampton, Va., continue to attempt the passage in spite of increased penalties imposed last year, the Associated Press reported Sunday.

Officials introduced tougher penalties for height violations last year, including fines of up to $500 and three demerit points on a truck driver’s commercial driver’s license for each offense.

In addition, the Virginia Department of Transportation and Norfolk International Terminals have installed new height detection equipment at the tunnel, AP said. Transport Topics


Tenn. Posts Hazmat Check Results

The Tennessee Highway Patrol released last Thursday the results of Homeland Security Hazmat Checkpoints that it held earlier this month and late June in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Manchester, Tenn.

The checkpoints processed about 5,000 trucks and found more than 100 safety violations, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said. Transport Topics
