Schneider National Inc. is enhancing intermodal service to and from Mexico, Senior Vice President Jim Filter told Transport Topics.

The move to reduce travel time by one day is being achieved by changing the route on the U.S. portion. The move also will enhance service reliability, Filter said.

Schneider also is expanding its container fleet next year to take advantage of growth opportunities and installing tracking systems on containers.

Schneider Intermodal’s Mexico Direct loads now travel between Chicago and Jackson, Miss., on the Canadian National Railway and between Jackson and Mexico on the Kansas City Southern Railway.

“Until recently, a Mexico Direct shipment interchanged in Houston,” Filter, said in a statement.

“There, it traveled 55 miles by truck, through a congested area, to get to the ramp that brought it to the next leg of the journey. The new interchange in Jackson eliminates all that. The load stays on the train and keeps moving, which saves customers at least one full day of transit time,” he said.

Schneider, based in Green Bay, Wis., ranks No. 6 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
