ruckload carrier Schneider National Inc. closed two of its Teamster-represented subsidiaries June 28 and 29 after failing to reach a labor contract that would free it from the financially strapped Central States Pension Fund.

Green Bay, Wis.-based Schneider said it closed its Schneider Tank Lines and Classic Division of Schneider Transport because the Teamsters union would not agree to a contract protecting Schneider from pension fund withdrawal liabilities, the company’s general counsel, Thomas E. Vandenberg, told Transport Topics.

“We believe they have a major funding issue,” said Vandenberg. “It’s a pretty big hole for anyone to climb out of.”

Teamsters headquarters referred inquiries to Teamsters Local 39 in Green Bay, which did not return calls by press time.
