Sandberg Cites Progress During FMCSA Tenure

AMPA, Fla. — Annette Sandberg, preparing to depart March 4 after three years as head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said she was proud of the agency’s progress in improving the safety of large trucks, but she expressed regrets over the agency’s efforts to revise hours-of-service rules.

“Hours of service didn’t go as I had envisioned,” she said. “[It] is going to be a challenge for anybody that’s there because it’s really at the core of how the industry operates and there are groups that seize on that as kind of their flag.”

Sandberg told Transport Topics her tenure left her with the impression that the trucking industry is a partner rather than an adversary in achieving a lower fatality rate.
