Less-than-truckload carrier Saia Inc. said Friday its second-quarter net income improved from a year ago.

Net income increased to $13.5 million, or 54 cents per share, from $11.9 million, or 48 cents, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 2% to $293 million and operating income rose 10% to $23.3 million, Saia said in a statement.

The company’s engineering initiatives and operating efficiencies reduced its reliance on purchased transportation, increased fuel efficiency and improved safety and cargo claims, CEO Rick O’Dell said.

Saia is ranked No. 22 on the Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
