Ryder System Inc. said it has begun an online natural gas truck training program for its 6,000 North American maintenance employees.

The program supplements existing custom training for employees who are already fueling and performing maintenance on natural-gas powered vehicles in customers’ fleets, according to Ryder.

The program will train employees in all natural gas vehicle configurations and platforms.

“As natural gas vehicle solutions continue to gain acceptance across North America, now is an appropriate time to ensure Ryder’s technician workforce at every facility is aware of the basic requirements for servicing the new technology,” Melvin Kirk, Ryder vice president of maintenance and quality operations, said in a statement.

“More and more of our customers are exploring this advanced fuel solution. Ryder is building on its leadership position by making a proactive investment to ensure our maintenance employees are knowledgeable and skilled in the safe operation and maintenance of natural gas vehicles,” said Kirk.

Ryder Supply Chain Solutions, part of Ryder System, is ranked No. 11 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

The Miami-based company has 14 natural gas maintenance facilities and 260 technicians trained on the alternative fuel.
