Ryder Capitalizes on Foreign Trade Zone

Ryder Group is cashing in on a seldom-publicized way to simplify customs processing for its customers shipping to or from Mexico.

On June 15, the company began operating its foreign trade zone, Kelly USA, on the former Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Todd Renehan, vice president of operations for the southwest region, said Ryder’s foreign trade zone is providing “an extra service as part of our cross-border operations, in addition to transporting, warehousing and managing Mexican brokers.”

The advantage for some clients is to lower or eliminate payment of duties, according to Renehan. Exporters and importers may use the zones to assemble, store and manufacture and payment of duties is delayed until goods are imported into the United States, exported out of the country or destroyed.
