uel retailers said they would be ready to sell ultra-low-sulfur diesel when the Environmental Protection Agency’s final implementation phase of the new fuel takes effect Oct. 15.

Truck-stop executives and oil industry officials said that although domestic production of ULSD has increased, retailers are beginning a gradual transition to the new fuel, which may take as long as two months to complete.

“There’s no actual requirement that retailers must sell only ULSD on Oct 15; they can downgrade it and sell it as low-sulfur for some period of time,” said Mike Leister, fuels technology manager for Marathon Petroleum. “They can’t do that forever, but they can get away with it for a couple of months.”
