Repeal of Fuel Tax For Rails, Barges Dropped by House

Rail and barge companies will continue to pay a 4.3-cent-per-gallon tax on diesel fuel after the House Rules Committee dropped a measure to repeal it from the Railroad Retirement and Survivors Act of 2000.

“Sometimes you have to sacrifice one good bill for the benefit of another good bill,” said Matt Miller, spokesman for Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R-Mo.), who sponsored the repeal of the tax.

Miller said on Sept. 13 that the repeal measure would probably be introduced in the next session of Congress, barring its attachment to any other bill in this session.

Hulshof, whose district abuts both the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, is also cosponsor of the entire act, which alters the benefit structure of the Railroad Retirement System.
