DaimlerChrysler AG said Thursday it named Andreas Renschler as the chief of its commercial vehicles division.

Renschler replaces Eckhard Cordes, who will take responsibility for the company's Mercedes Car Group on Oct. 1, DaimlerChrysler said in a statement.

Renschler was most recently head of Mercedes’ Smart minicar business.

Cordes was appointed to take over the commercial vehicles unit in 2000 and was credited with a rapid turnaround at the truck division, including a successful restructuring of the Freightliner unit, the Detroit News reported.
