en. Mark Pryor (D – Ark.) proposed Wednesday legislation that would require all applicants for commercial driver’s licenses in the United States to be legal citizens with valid social security numbers, the Arkansas News Bureau reported.

The legislation was presented as an amendment to a proposed port security bill currently being debated in the Senate, Arkansas News said.

Meanwhile, the future of the bill is in doubt as Republicans and Democrats clash over proposed amendments like Sen. Pryor’s CDL legislation, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Sen. Ted Stevens (R – Alaska) slammed Democratic additions to the bill, calling them attempts to block passage of the new port security legislation, AP said.

Port security became a priority in Congress following a debate in February that arose when a United Arab Emirates-owned company submitted a bid to take over operations at six major U.S. ports, AP said. (Click here for previous coverage.)
