Postal Service Could Shut Down Without Action by Congress

The U.S. Postal Service may have to shut down this winter unless Congress acts to address the agency’s financial crisis, the New York Times reported.

The Postal Service said it won’t be able to make a $5.5 billion payment this month because it will hit its borrowing limit, the Associated Press reported.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe was scheduled to go before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Tuesday to discuss the Postal Service’s debt, AP said.

The agency has proposed ending Saturday mail delivery and is also considering job cuts, AP reported.
