he Port of New York and New Jersey set a new cargo record of 1.8 million loaded 20-foot equivalent units handled in the first half of 2006, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Thursday.

The level is a 10.1% increase over the 1.7 million units handled in the first half 2005 and exceeded expectations of a 7% gain, the port authority said in a statement.

The rise was fueled largely by Asian trade, which accounted for about 48% of the port’s total trade.
