CSX Work to Close Part of Truck Route

The State Road 50 truck route from Main Street to Emerson Road in Brooksville, Fla., is being shut down for close to three weeks as a rail crossing is reconstructed to enable the widening of the two-lane route to four lanes. The shutdown begins Monday, with the crossing reconstruction set to be complete April 8.

There is a detour along Main Street, Summit Road, and E. Jefferson Street, but AIM Engineering & Surveying project engineer Frank Proch said truckers will likely stay out of the area completely, probably increasing truck traffic in downtown Brooksville. The construction project will also widen part of the two-lane U.S. 41 to six lanes. St. Petersburg Times (03/18/00) P. 1, Hernando Times Section; DeWitt, Dan

Teamsters Puzzled by Developments With Associated Wholesale Grocers

Teamsters drivers are beginning to doubt that the union will succeed in winning a new contract with Associated Wholesale Grocers now that Associated has reached a deal in which Refrigerated Transport Express will deliver products from an underground facility in Carthage, Mo.

Refrigerated would also take over trucking in Springfield, Mo., if the union fails to win a new contract, but the Carthage agreement will go forward regardless of whether there is a new Teamsters contract. However, the Carthage deal does not start until Associated's "box stores" open, and locations for those stores have not yet even been selected.

The union and Associated were negotiating on the new contract all last week, with some movement Friday when the union put forth a compensation model designed in response to the savings Associated would realize by hiring an outside transportation company. Associated Press (03/18/00)
