    Court Rules Against Trucker

The South Carolina Supreme Court decided Monday that Dorchester County may ban the parking of commercial vehicles in residential areas.

The case began in 1996 when the county passed a law that stopped trucker Dennis Whaley from parking in the Crestwood subdivision even though he had been doing so for 11 months. Whaley said the zoning law was selectively enforced, backing up his contention with photos of other commercial vehicles parked in the area.

The high court ruled 3-2 that Whaley did not prove discrimination on the part of planning and zoning officials, and that the 1996 law is not unconstitutional, or overly broad and does not represent a taking of property. In August, the Berkeley County council held off a potential bolstering of its trucking ordinance pending the outcome of this case. Charleston (S.C) Post and Courier Online (12/07/99) ; Wise, Warren

Gordon Trucking Finds Good Results With Industrial Grade Inverter/Charges

Gordon Trucking, of Pacific, Wash., lately started field tests of Trace Engineering's inverter/chargers, which convert DC power to AC power, enabling drivers to use household appliances like space heaters, computers, and microwaves. The converters also allow drivers to power appliances with "shore power" as they charge the batteries. The tests regard how the converters reduce idling while improving driver retention by keeping truckers more comfortable.

Rick Miltimore, director of shop operations, said he has heard good things from truckers, including the amount of money they save by cooking in their rigs.

"The key to making inverters standard in the industry is getting the major truck stops to provide drivers with the ability to plug in, perhaps at a small cost," he said.

Even though purchasers of the inverters could recoup their cost over time through reduced idling, the main advantage will be homier surroundings for truckers, said Miltimore. Layover.com (12/06/99)
