Tanker Driver Contains Fuel Explosion
Tampa, Fla., Police Lt. Hugh Miller credited tanker-truck owner-operator Bridget Neumann, 37, with saving her own life and probably others' as well when she quickly went to her truck's shutoff valves after someone in a sport-utility vehicle flicked a cigarette at her while she unloaded gasoline.Although she kept the fire out of the fuel lines, her $40,000 truck was ruined by the 500 gallons of leaked gasoline that caught fire Saturday night at the Joy Food Store in Tampa.
"If it hadn't been for Miss Neumann's quick actions, we would probably have had a catastrophe here," said Tampa Fire Rescue investigator Al Alcala.
As a single mother with three children, Neumann, who is Tampa-based Imperial Transport's safety officer, is concerned that she has been deprived of her source of income at Christmas time. She said she would immediately take up any offer of a company truck.
Area residents helped evacuate eight homes as firefighters put out the blaze. Police are seeking the perpetrator or perpetrators for attempted murder and arson. St. Petersburg Times Online (12/06/99) ; Gibson, Linda

Aviation firms in Memphis are setting records as more and more companies turn to air freight. Between January and September, Memphis Aviation Services owner Randy Kruger said he saw roughly 1.1 million pounds handled via Wilson Air Center, one of the two local fixed base operators.Frequently, when freight being moved by ground starts to fall behind schedule, the truck it is in is sent to Memphis International Airport for air shipment. According to Kruger, much of the volume is supplies and parts that companies are sending to their Mexican and Canadian operations.
With more aircraft using Memphis International, the airport will have to decide whether to expand the current location as much as possible or construct another location, Kruger said. Memphis Business Journal Online (12/06/99) ; Paulk, Michael
