The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration proposes to more than double the registration fee for companies hauling hazardous materials — to $2,500 a year.

The current amount for most carriers is $1,000 a year, including administrative fees, and “is necessary to fund the national Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grants program,” PHMSA said.

The fee for carriers classified as small or nonprofit will remain at the current rate of $250 a year.
