Peterbilt Motors Co. announced that its SmartNav communications system will soon offer the capability to install and operate the PeopleNet app directly from the truck’s in-cab display.

According to Peterbilt, the integration includes an Ethernet connection and functionality that allows drivers to use the app’s electronic logging device capability to record duty hours, and also to integrate with fleet management systems.

The enhancements to the SmartNav system will be available for order in November 2018.

“Peterbilt commits a significant amount of time and resources to researching the driver environment,” said Kim Lawton, Peterbilt’s Medium Duty and Technology Marketing Manager. “Removing the need for a secondary device to handle fleet management and logging device functionality improves cab ergonomics and is a testament to Peterbilt’s dedication to the driver.”

“For more than four years, PeopleNet and Trimble have partnered with Peterbilt to deliver factory-fit solutions that help fleets increase performance and efficiency,” added Garland Jackson, Trimble’s senior vice president for its Transportation Mobility Division. “With the incorporation of the PeopleNet app into the SmartNav display, Peterbilt can now offer fleet customers seamless access to Trimble’s latest fleet mobility solutions in a factory installed solution.”

Also available in the updated display will be the Peterbilt TruckCare Assistance app. The Android-based app comes standard with SmartNav display and connects to a driver’s phone via Bluetooth.
