Paccar Inc.’s two truck-making companies — Peterbilt and Kenworth — are offering potential customers free extended warranties and other discounts on tractors with lower-emission engines from Cummins Inc. in an attempt to spark slumping sales.
The manufacturer’s moves come against a backdrop of layoff announcements at International Truck & Engine Corp. and Detroit Diesel Corp. related to an anticipated drop in demand for trucks with the new engines mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency for most new trucks sold after Oct. 1.Meanwhile, Cummins scheduled a news conference for Aug. 26, but the company’s marketing director, Thomas Keiffer, wouldn’t divulge the topic.
