Consumer personal spending was unchanged in August, despite the rise in employment and drop in consumer confidence, the Commerce Department said Monday.

Incomes rose 0.5% after a 0.6% drop in July, Commerce said.

Economists forecast spending would rise 0.2%, Bloomberg reported.

An increase in consumer spending could increase demand for new factory goods and the trucking shipments that get them to stores.
