Pepsi Heads Seven Fleets Competing in Run on Less Event

Seven fleets are participating in national Run On Less event hosted by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency and Carbon War Room, led by PepsiCo Inc., which ranks No. 1 on the Transport Topics Top 100 rankings of private carriers in North America.

Each fleet participating will outfit a truck with fuel-saving technology and select a driver that showcases the company’s strides in emissions reduction and fuel efficiency.

Other participants include Albert Transport, Frito-Lay division, Hirschbach, Mesilla Valley Transportation (No. 66 on the for-hire TT100), Nussbaum Transportation, Ploger Transportation and U.S. Xpress Enterprises (No. 19 on the for-hire TT100).

Geotab will install devices to measure fuel usage, idle time, cruise control usage, payload, weather conditions and other variables for each truck. Data will be streamed from the trucks participating and published on the web page.

NACFE and CWR hope this showcase of technology opens up the opportunity for companies to share their trade secrets for fuel efficiency. Baseline data will be used to cross-reference the improvements made to the individual trucks.

“We’re looking at multiple reference points to understand what the national average is for trucks and we’ll compare it [results] to that,” NACFE Executive Director Mike Roeth said during a press conference June 19. The event is expecting to see results around 9 mpg.

Stories and profiles of the truckers will be posted throughout the three-week run time of the event that starts in early September online at runonless.com. The event’s conclusion and announcement of the winning fleet will take place at the inaugural North American Commercial Vehicle show in Atlanta Sept. 25-28, where manufacturers and parts producers exhibit products. Shell and PepsiCo are the title sponsors.
