Omnitracs has jumped into the burgeoning in-cab camera market with its own onboard video system.

The trucking technology supplier said its Critical Event Video product fully integrates with the company’s telematics and fleet-management technology.

Fleets can use the camera system to improve driver training and help reduce liability risks from accidents and other critical events, Omnitracs said.

“Incorporating in-vehicle video into their company’s safety and risk management strategy is an important choice more and more of our customers are making,” Drew Schimelpfenig, Omnitracs’ safety product management and integrations manager, said in the Aug. 17 announcement.

The product launch further expands the number of technology vendors competing in the onboard video space.

Rival telematics providers such as PeopleNet and MiX Telematics have added onboard camera options to their offerings as well.

Video-based safety systems also are available from third party suppliers such as Lytx Inc. and SmartDrive Systems.

Omnitracs, formerly part of Qualcomm Inc., first announced its plans to enter the in-cab video space in February at its annual user conference in Dallas.
