N.Y. Manufacturing Index Gains

Manufacturing growth in New York rose this month, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said Tuesday.

The regional Fed’s “Empire State Index,” usually the first economic indicator of a given month, jumped to an 8 reading from 3.8 in April.

Readings above zero indicate expansion. The reading matched economists’ forecasts, Bloomberg reported.

The survey’s new orders index also rose to 8, from 3.9, while the shipments index rose to 14.1 from 8.7.

Manufacturing is one of trucking’s largest and most important customers.
