2019 Recap

With the defending Grand Champion out of the picture, some home cooking spiced up the Kansas Truck Driving Championships on June 14-15.

Kevin Mailand, competing in the 3-Axle class, was one of two YRC Freight drivers to reach the winner’s circle at Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. YRC Freight is based in Overland Park, about 66 miles east of Topeka.

Mailand also placed first in Field Test, which recognizes the drivers who scored the most points while navigating a course that contained six “problems.”

2019 Preview

At first glance, the Kansas Truck Driving Championships might be more notable by who is absent than who will be the ultimate winner.

FedEx Freight Ace Don Logan, last year’s Grand Champ out of the Tank Truck division, isn’t competing at Kansas Expocentre in Topeka on June 14-15.

With Logan out of the picture, the field can breathe a collective sigh of relief that the man with five state Grand Champion titles, one on the national stage (2012) and three additional national division titles won’t be behind the wheel this weekend. In all, Logan has made a dozen trips to the National Truck Driving Championships.

When: June 14-15, 2019

Where: Kansas Expocentre, Topeka, Kan. Field: More than 150 truck drivers are expected to compete in nine categories.

Preview: 2018 Grand Champion Terry Wood of Walmart Transportation will be back to defend his overall crown as well as his first-place finish in sleeper berth. -->

Kansas’ Don Logan Earns 12th Trip to NTDC

This is a warning to the drivers who qualified for the National Truck Driving Championships in the Tank Truck division: Don Logan of FedEx Freight will be joining you.

(And his competitive fire still is burning strong.)

The national Grand Champion in 2012 with a long list of accolades surpassed the competition at the Kansas qualifier in mid-June. His strong showing at states marked the fifth time he’s earned best-in-show honors, paving the way for a 12th trip to the national stage.

This year, Logan kicked off his training early: “I start studying for the written test in late April. … And the driving portion of it, this year I probably practiced more than I have in the past, which was probably, I think I practiced four Sundays for two or three hours, leading up to the competition, which is a little bit more than I’ve done in the past.”
