n environmental group has challenged new federal regulations for light-truck fuel-economy regulations, Bloomberg reported Monday.

The Natural Resources Defense Council filed the court challenge, claiming the rules fall short of protecting U.S. energy security, Bloomberg said.

The petition, pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York, was the second to challenge the rules, Bloomberg reported. The regulations were also challenged April 6 by the Tucson, Ariz., Center for Biological Diversity.

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta announced the rules March 29, which would reduce emissions on light trucks including sport utility vehicles by 11% from 2008 through 2011. (Click here for previous coverage.)
