Norfolk Southern, CSX Confident Of Smooth Ride for Peak Season

Spokesmen for the two railroads that gobbled up Conrail last year —and almost choked on it — are convinced that the companies now have the situation under control as the peak freight transportation season approaches.

Last year at this time, Norfolk Southern Railroad and CSX Transportation were beginning an agonizing climb out of a morass of computer screw-ups, congested terminals and lost and misdirected trains, only to see another downturn in all the measures of efficiency helped along by a vicious hurricane named Floyd.

Now, a year later, the two companies say they have solved the operational problems accompanying the Conrail “split” and will take the seasonal bulge in their stride.

The seasonal peak for the two railroads is mainly merchandise traffic that builds and culminates with a rush of intermodal volume as the winter holiday season approaches.
