Final Vote on Energy Bill Blocked in Senate
Supporters of the energy bill in the Senate failed by three votes on Friday to cut off debate on the legislation, news services reported.Friday's vote was 57-40. However, under the Senate's rules, 60 votes were needed to close debate on the bill and move to a final vote.

Dana to Supply Driveshafts for Hino Trucks
Vehicle parts maker Dana Corp. said Thursday it was selected by Hino Motors Ltd. to provide Spicer driveshaft assemblies for 2005 Hino North American Class 4 through 7 vehicles.The trucks will be available at Hino's North American dealers beginning in January 2004, according to the release.
Dana will supply Spicer Life Series 70, 100 and 140 driveshafts for the 2005 Hino platform. The driveshafts will be assembled in Dana's facility in Renton, Wash. Transport Topics
Volvo Chooses Goodyear for Truck Tires
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company said late Thursday it signed a three-year deal making commercial truck tires the standard equipment on all Volvo trucks produced for North America.Goodyear said in a release its truck tires for Volvo vehicles are produced at facilities in Danville, Va. and Topeka, Kan.
The company also said it renewed the current standard agreement with Mack Trucks Inc., a subsidiary of the Volvo Group, through October 2006. Transport Topics
Intermodal Rail Loads Up 10.2% in Latest Week
Intermodal traffic on the nation's railroads continued to outperform last year's pace, the Association of American Railroads reported Thursday.Railroading, like commercial trucking, is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be merchandise rather than bulk commodities, is more directly competitive with trucking and more reflective of the state of the economy.
The AAR said 209,246 trailers and containers were loaded in the week ended Nov. 15, which was up 10.2% from the corresponding week a year ago.
For the first 46 weeks of the year, trailer and container loadings totaled 8.8 million, which is 6.7% above last year's pace. Transport Topics
California Considers Closing Rest Stops
The California Department of Transportation may close several highway rest stops as the state government tries to cut into a multi-billion dollar deficit, San Diego television station KGTV reported on its Web site.One stop being considered for closing is Aliso Creek Rest Stop, located on Interstate 5 in Camp Pendleton, the article said. It costs about $900,000 a year to maintain the rest stop.
Three other stops in Imperial County may be closed as well.
If the Aliso stop was closed, trucker Saul Cervantes told the television station he was concerned he would have use the side of the road check his vehicle, which could be very dangerous. Transport Topics
