WSJ: OPEC Nations Expected to Keep Overproducing

Although it is not clear whether OPEC will follow through with its previously announced oil production cut scheduled to take effect on April 1, officials said some member nations will keep pumping to reap a profit while prices are so high, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Since September, OPEC has called for output reductions two times, but it is pumping more oil than before, the Journal said.

OPEC oil ministers are scheduled to meet next week to review output levels and officials have sent mixed signals whether they abandon the production cut of 1 million barrels a day to 23.5 million barrels agreed to in early February. Transport Topics

Rail Intermodal Loadings Rise 10%, AAR Says

The number of intermodal loadings on the nation’s railroads totaled 206,976 trailers or containers in the week ended March 20, up 10.1% from the same week a year earlier, the Association of American Railroads said late Thursday.

Railroading, like commercial trucking, is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be merchandise rather than bulk commodities, is more directly competitive with trucking and more reflective of the state of the economy.

AAR said trailer traffic gained 14.2%, while container volume was up 8.6% in the latest week.

For the first 11 weeks of the year, intermodal volume totaled 2.2 million trailers or containers, up 6.9% from last year, AAR said. Transport Topics
