New Hours Rule Nears; ATA Eyes Sleeper Cab Petition

he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it was set to begin enforcing its new hours-of-service regulations Jan. 4, probably without major changes in the rules it published in April.

“We’re moving forward with the rules on carriers,” said FMCSA spokeswoman Suzy Bohnert. She said she did not foresee the agency making major modifications to the regulations.

Nevertheless, American Trucking Associations plans to petition the agency to make one change in the rules concerning the time drivers can spend in sleeper cabs, said David Osiecki, ATA vice president for safety and operations.
