N.C.'s Quick Pass to Be Compatible With E-ZPass

North Carolina’s Quick Pass toll collection system and the multistate E-ZPass system will become compatible Thursday, when users of both transponders will be able to pay tolls in both systems, the North Carolina Turnpike Authority announced.

The move opens North Carolina’s new Triangle Expressway toll road to E-ZPass users, while opening existing E-ZPass-compatible toll roads to Quick Pass users who have transponders with hard cases, the authority said in a Dec. 27 statement. Toll roads in 14 states are currently compatible with E-ZPass.

Hard-case transponders cost $20, while sticker transponders that are not compatible with E-ZPass cost $5.

“This is an exciting day for the people in 15 states and a monumental business agreement for the tolling industry,” PJ Wilkins, executive director of the E-ZPass Group, said in a statement.

The Triangle Expressway, opened in two phases in 2011 and 2012, is North Carolina’s only toll road. Since its opening, all tolls have been collected electronically, which uses toll transponders and license-plate recognition to send bills to other drivers.
