orth Carolina’s tax on motor fuels will remain at a record level of nearly 30 cents a gallon through the end of the year and will not change July 1 because average wholesale prices have remained static, the Associated Press reported.

North Carolina Revenue Secretary Norris Tolson told AP the 29.9-cent per gallon rate will remain because wholesale prices were about the same through a six-month period ended March 31.

The tax on diesel and gasoline jumped by 2.8 cents per gallon in January, the highest rise in two decades. A state official said the tax also applies to specialty fuels such as biodiesel and ethanol. (Click here for previous coverage.)

A portion of the tax is recalculated twice a year based on the wholesale price of gasoline.
