Truck and engine maker Navistar International Corp. said it will jointly develop and build cabover vocational trucks with American LaFrance LLC.

The vehicles will have a low cab built over the engine and initially will be for the waste and construction industries, Navistar said late Wednesday.

The two said they will use the American LaFrance’s manufacturing plant in Summerville, S.C., to build the trucks.

American LaFrance, which makes fire trucks and traces its company roots back to 1832, exited bankruptcy in July. It operates four manufacturing facilities with over 200 dealership locations throughout North America.

“Working with American LaFrance is another example of Navistar’s strategy of growth through leveraging our own assets and those that others have built,” said Daniel Ustian, Navistar’s chairman and chief executive officer. “This relationship provides us with a new opportunity to further grow our business globally and meet the needs of customers through a new line of vocational vehicles.”
